A Collaborative Breeding Strategy for Organic Potatoes in the Netherlands Organic Eprints
Lammerts van Bueren, E.T..
The ability of the organic farmer’s agronomic toolbox to reduce the susceptibility of a potato crop to late blight is limited, certainly under the Dutch climatic conditions. Conventional breeding programs do not generate either a sufficient number nor appropriate types of resistant varieties for organic systems; and a separate breeding program for the limited area of organic potato production is simply not viable. Therefore, all concerned forces have joined together in an umbrella program called Bioimpuls for organic potato improvement.

A major gene for grain cadmium accumulation in oat (Avena sativa L.) Organic Eprints
Tanhuanpää, Pirjo; Kalendar, Ruslan; Schulman, Alan; Kiviharju, Elina.
Four DNA markers associated with Cd concentration were found: two RAPDs (random amplified polymorphic DNAs), one REMAP (retrotransposon-microsatellite amplified polymorphism), and one SRAP (sequence-related amplified polymorphism). The markers were assigned to one linkage group which exhibited a QTL (quantitative trait locus) representing a major gene for Cd accumulation. The markers can be used in future breeding programmes for healthy oat cultivars.

A Treasure of Crop Diversity from Outstanding Farmer-Breeder, JP Singh (India) Organic Eprints
Singh, Jai Prakash; Mansata, Bharat; Nellithanam, Jacob; Kundaji, Deepika.
Jaiprakash Singh (aka JP) is an outstanding organic farmer breeder of several important and widely cultivated crops like rice, wheat, pigeon pea and mustard. He started this work more than 2 decades ago, and presently has 480 varieties of rice, 120 varieties of wheat, 40 varieties of pigeon pea, 3 varieties of mustard; also some chillies and tomatoes. These varieties are ‘developed’ or evolved over many crop cycles through a process of multi-generational selection for distinct features and qualities, including grain yield, pest resistance, special nutritive values, flavour, fragrance, grain size, shape, colour, etc. The varieties bred by JP are particularly useful for many farmers still following or reverting to indigenous organic system in India. JP’s 5...

Ability of new durum wheat pure lines to meet yield stability and quality requirements in low input and organic systems Organic Eprints
Colomb, B.; Desclaux, D.; Debaeke, P.; Justes, E.; Burger, P..
Low-input production schemes adopted in organic or conventional farms require crop varieties that combine good product quality and high yield stability under non optimal environmental conditions (Gooding et al., 1999). These traits are not yet found among the durum wheat genotypes available in France. Consequently the cultivation of this crop is hardly successful in stockless organic farms in southern France, which are characterised by very low nitrogen resources. Some hopes emerged with the identification of new durum wheat pure lines with a high grain protein content in breeding experiments conducted near Montpellier in 2001 and 2002. The aim of the present work was to confirm and elucidate the origin of the enhanced protein performance of these new...

Acknowledging the Role of Gender in Organic farming, Informal Seed Sector in particular and krisoks’ Perspectives Organic Eprints
Shahid, Shaila; Md. Hossain, Zakir.
Seed-the source of life. And woman holds the seed with the hope of new life. Instead of producing diverse seed from homestead agriculture, women are engaged traditionally to select seed, drying, preserving, protecting during storage, saving them from any economical crisis of the family. To ensure the seed quality and the perfect storage place & methods, women hold the vast knowledge. They decide the quantity and variety of seed to be saved and the method of preservation. Seed selection by women is a continuous activity. Working in the fields, they observe the plants and decide which seeds to select. They identify plants of good quality on the basis of size, grain formation and their resistance to pests and insects. Here a woman looks at the seed...

Adaptation of lupins for Northern European maritime conditions Organic Eprints
Joernsgaard, B.; Christiansen, J.L.; Kuptsov, N..
Lupin as a grain crop has been restricted in growing area to more continental conditions due to their indeterminate growth form, which in maritime Northern European areas causes excessive vegetative development, late and uneven ripening and lodging. However, new reduced branching types provides better possibilities for adaptation to these conditions, and preliminary results indicates potential seed yields up to 5-6 tons per ha in the narrowed leafed lupins (Lupinus angustifolius) and an acceptable stable and early ripening. Due to full susceptibility to anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) in white (L. albus) and yellow (L. luteus) their introduction in these environments is doubtful. In these growing areas Botrytis (Botrytis cinerea) and fusarium...

Advances in research and development of mango industry Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Bally,Ian S. E..
World mango production is spread over 100 countries that produce over 34.3 million tons of fruit annually. Eighty percent of this production is based in the top nine producing nations that also consume upward of 90% of their production domestically. One to 2 percent of fruit is traded internationally in to markets in the European Community, USA, Arabian Peninsula and Asia. This paper outlines some of the recent research and development advances in mango breeding and genomics, rootstock development, disease management and harvest technologies that are influencing the production and quality of mango fruit traded domestically and internationally.

Against the grain Organic Eprints
Döring, Thomas F.; Crowley, Oliver; Wolfe, Martin.
An Organic Research Centre project is examining how diversity-based tools can assist in the on-farm improvement of organic wheat. Successful organic crop production requires varieties that are resistant to diseases, competitive against weeds, and effective at scavenging nutrients. Yet conventional plant breeding has largely neglected organic systems by breeding varieties exclusively for high input conditions. As a consequence, organic producers currently do not have enough choice of plant varieties for organic conditions. One way to expand the choice is to create plant diversity anew and subject it to natural selection on organic farms. After several generations the dominating plants would be better suited to organic systems. This idea is being tested...

Agronomic performances of self-reseeding legumes on alkaline soil under Mediterranean climate Organic Eprints
Ayoub, Dr. Mohamed.
Self-reseeding legumes are an essential component of the Mediterranean natural resources. Germplasms collected from the Mediterranean region were introduced in Australia and subjected to an extensive breeding. Species were then re-introduced in their original habitat where they were object of different important researches. Despite all the efforts made to select appropriate species and varieties, well-adapted cultivars have not been yet identified for all situations. At the experimental farm of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari, Italy, agronomic performances of 15 cultivars of self reseeding legumes were compared on an alkaline soil to evaluate their possible use in organic agriculture systems. 10-m2 plots were used in a complete randomised...
